Best Bali Wellness Retreats: 12 Spa and Health Retreats Compared — cover photo

Most of the best Bali wellness retreats sit in two places: the Ayung River valley around Ubud, and the south coast near Canggu, Jimbaran and Uluwatu. Below are twelve spa retreats in Bali that are open and taking guests, with where each one is, what it focuses on and who it suits. We have not stayed at them, so the descriptions come from each property's own website, plus a few news and travel sources. The order is by area, not a ranking.

What is the difference between a spa retreat and a wellness retreat in Bali?

Spa retreats in Bali fall into two kinds. A spa retreat is built around treatments: massages, body scrubs, water therapy. A wellness retreat adds a structured programme on top, usually a consultation, set meals, daily movement and a fixed number of nights. If you want a spa retreat for a long weekend, a resort spa is enough. If you want to change a habit, sleep better or detox, look at the programme-based places.

How do I choose between Bali spa retreats?

Decide three things first: how many nights you have, whether you want a programme or just treatments, and how far from the airport you are willing to go. COMO's website puts its Ubud-area estate about 90 minutes from Ngurah Rai airport. Jimbaran and Uluwatu are closer to the airport. Many programmes start at three nights, so a one or two-night stay often means treatments only.

Also check the food. Several of the places below serve plant-forward menus and do not treat alcohol or meat as a given. That is a feature if you want it and a surprise if you do not.

COMO Shambhala Estate

Area: near Ubud, Ayung River valley. Best for: goal-based programmes with medical-style diagnostics.

COMO describes the estate as a 22-acre sanctuary of riverine forest with a sacred spring, about 20 minutes from central Ubud and about 90 minutes from the airport. The signature product is a set of six Wellness Paths. Each one starts with a consultation and leads to a personal plan of movement, food and treatments. Yoga, Pilates and guided hikes are part of the schedule. If you want a luxury wellness retreat with real structure and are happy to follow a plan, look here first.

Fivelements Ubud

Area: Ayung River, Ubud area. Best for: longer stays, detox and emotional reset.

This is the place formerly known as Fivelements Retreat Bali. It was renamed Fivelements Ubud, and the company says it opened on the Ayung River in 2007. Its programmes run from three to fourteen nights. Panca Mahabhuta (stress and burnout) runs 3 to 14 nights, the Tri Kaya Parisudha detox runs 5 to 14 nights, and three others (Sattva Yatra, Shakti Sadhana for women, Prema Sambandha for couples) run 3 to 7 nights. The food is plant-forward and the buildings are bamboo. It suits people who want a proper stretch of time rather than a spa day.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

Area: Sayan, Ayung River valley, Ubud. Best for: a short, guided retreat in a large luxury resort.

Four Seasons runs a retreat called Guided by Gratitude that guests can start on any day of the year. It is three nights, extendable, and includes guided meditation, yoga, a Balinese water blessing, sound therapy and a chakra rebalancing treatment, according to the resort's launch coverage. The Sacred River Spa sits in the valley. If you want a spa and wellness retreat that does not take a week, this is one of the few with a fixed three-night format.

Hanging Gardens of Bali

Area: Desa Buahan, Payangan, above the Ayung River. Best for: spa-focused stays in a private villa.

Hanging Gardens is a villa resort first and a retreat second. Its spa collection includes a Spa by the River beside the Ayung, treatments in private jungle spa villas and a Balinese wellness retreat package that combines spa rituals and meditation. Choose it if you want a spa retreat in Bali built around privacy and treatments, not group classes.

Bagus Jati Health and Wellbeing Retreat

Area: Desa Sebatu, Tegallalang, north of Ubud. Best for: yoga, Ayurveda and detox in a quieter hill setting.

Bagus Jati offers named packages: a Balinese Sejati Retreat (yoga, meditation, cooking classes, jungle treks, spa rituals), a Yoga and Ayurveda Retreat and a Detox Retreat. Sebatu is in the hills north of Ubud, not in town, so plan your transport. It is a good fit if you want fewer crowds and a package you can book as a whole.

The Yoga Barn

Area: central Ubud, about five minutes on foot from the Monkey Forest. Best for: drop-in classes, solo travellers, shorter or flexible stays.

The Yoga Barn is a centre rather than a resort. Its site says it runs more than 25 classes a day, with retreats, healing treatments, a cafe and on-site accommodation (The Nest). You can build your own retreat by booking classes and treatments by the day. It is the easiest option here to try without committing to a full package.

Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort

Area: Tabanan, about 20 minutes from Canggu. Best for: a retreat on the Canggu side, or a day pass.

Ulaman describes itself as an eco-luxury resort among rice fields, with a Riverside Spa that has an ice bath, hot bath and sauna, plus a Mandala Shala for yoga. It also sells a day pass that gives access to the Riverside Spa facilities and the restaurant pool, which makes it useful if you are staying in Canggu and want one recovery day rather than a week away.

Desa Seni

Area: Baturiti, in the mountains of Tabanan. Best for: a slower village-style stay with yoga and art.

Desa Seni's current website places it in the Baturiti highlands. It sells packages of 3, 5 and 7 nights called Reset, Renewal and Immersion, and lists massage, reflexology, body scrubs and a yoga programme. Baturiti is a long way from the beach resorts, so this is for people who want the highlands, not a coast day.

Samanvaya

Area: Sidemen Valley, Karangasem, east Bali. Best for: adults who want rice terraces, a pool and a spa without the Ubud crowds.

Time Out describes Samanvaya as an adults-only resort in the Sidemen Valley with two infinity pools, a spa and yoga sessions. There is no official site to point to, so confirm the age policy and current programmes with the resort before booking. Sidemen is the area to choose if you want a spa retreat in Bali that feels like a village rather than a resort strip.

AYANA Resort

Area: Jimbaran, south coast. Best for: treatments close to the airport and a large resort with a lot of facilities.

AYANA's spa covers 2.2 hectares and has three spaces: a village-style area, a thalassotherapy pool filled with heated seawater, and Spa on the Rocks, a villa on the cliff. The spa is listed as open 10:00 to 20:00 and the thalassotherapy pool 10:00 to 19:00. This is a resort with a spa, not a programme retreat, so it suits couples and families who want treatments plus everything else a big resort offers.

Six Senses Uluwatu

Area: Jalan Penaga, Pecatu, Bukit Peninsula. Best for: clifftop yoga and meditation near Uluwatu Temple.

The resort now appears on the Six Senses website as Six Senses Bali and says Uluwatu Temple is minutes away. A resort-published article describes personalised regenerative wellness retreats with a wellness consultation, yoga and meditation overlooking the Indian Ocean. Retreat lengths and dates change by season, so ask the resort directly. It suits people who want a south-coast base and still want a structured wellness plan.

COMO Canggu

Area: Canggu, beside the surf. Best for: a beach stay with healthy food and massages, with a retreat elsewhere.

COMO Canggu has 119 rooms and suites and is about 90 minutes from the airport. It is not a retreat in itself. COMO points guests who want the full programme to its Shambhala estate, so the two work as a pair if you want a few beach days either side of a retreat.

Which are the best health retreats in Bali for a detox?

The best health retreats in Bali for a detox are the ones that publish a named detox programme with a set length. From the list above, that means Fivelements Ubud (Tri Kaya Parisudha, 5 to 14 nights), Bagus Jati (its Detox Retreat) and COMO Shambhala (detox is one of its goals-based Wellness Paths). If you are comparing the best Bali health retreats, ask each for the daily schedule, who supervises it and what happens if you stop halfway.

Which is the best wellness resort in Bali if I do not want a programme?

For the best wellness resort in Bali without a programme, choose a resort with a big spa and book treatments by the day. AYANA in Jimbaran and Hanging Gardens above the Ayung are the two on this list built that way. There is no single winner. The right one depends on whether you want sea or river, and on how long you will spend in a car.

Which area has the best wellness retreats in Bali?

Ubud and the Ayung River valley have the most choice: COMO Shambhala, Fivelements, Four Seasons Sayan, Hanging Gardens and The Yoga Barn are all here or close by. Choose Sidemen for quiet and views of terraces, Canggu and Tabanan for rice fields plus an easy trip to the coast, and Uluwatu or Jimbaran if you do not want a long transfer from the airport.

Area Places above Feel
Ubud / Ayung valley COMO Shambhala, Fivelements, Four Seasons Sayan, Hanging Gardens, The Yoga Barn Programmes, river valley, most options
North of Ubud Bagus Jati Quiet hill setting
Sidemen Samanvaya Rice terraces, small and calm
Canggu / Tabanan Ulaman, COMO Canggu, Desa Seni (highlands) Rice fields near the coast
Jimbaran / Uluwatu AYANA, Six Senses Uluwatu Clifftop, closer to the airport

How long should a wellness retreat in Bali be?

Three nights is the usual minimum for a programme, and seven is where most people notice a difference. The sites above list three-night formats (Four Seasons Sayan, Desa Seni), 3 to 7 nights (several Fivelements programmes) and up to 14 nights (Fivelements Panca Mahabhuta and Tri Kaya Parisudha). One or two nights works for a spa-only stay.

Most of these retreats do not publish prices openly and rates change by season, so none are quoted here. Ask each retreat for the current rate and what is included: meals, treatments and transfers are the three things that differ most.

What does a wellness day trip from the south look like?

You do not need a week. If you are based in Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu, you can fit a spa day in Ubud or a day pass at Ulaman. Ubud is roughly an hour to an hour and a half from the south coast depending on traffic, so a day trip works best if you start early and stay in the valley.

We run a private Ubud tour from $60 per car, and a transfer from the airport to Ubud from $32 per car through our airport to Ubud transfer. Tell us you want a spa or yoga stop instead of the usual sights and we will say what fits the day. Ubud also has places worth combining with a treatment: the Ubud Monkey Forest is a short walk from The Yoga Barn, and the Campuhan Ridge Walk is a gentle morning walk before a massage.

What else should I check before booking?

Three things catch people out. First, names change: Fivelements Retreat Bali is now Fivelements Ubud, and Six Senses Uluwatu now shows as Six Senses Bali on the brand's site. Second, some older lists still include retreats whose websites no longer work, so book through the official site, not a copied listing. Third, transfers in the Ayung valley and Sidemen take longer than the map suggests.

If you want to pair a retreat with sightseeing, our posts on unusual things to do in Bali and activities beyond the beaches cover the rest of the island. For a spa day in Ubud that also takes in the temple water ritual, see Tirta Empul.
