Surf forecast basics
How to read a Bali surf forecast
- Wave height — and what "chest-high" means
- Forecasts give the face height of the wave in feet or metres. Surfers translate it against the body: waist-high is roughly 2 ft, chest-high 3 ft, head-high 4 ft, and overhead anything above that. So a "4–5 ft, chest to head" call means a rideable, punchy wave that most intermediates can handle — not a 5-foot drop.
- Swell direction and period
- Bali's west coast and the Bukit face the Indian Ocean and need a south-west groundswell; the east coast breaks such as Keramas want south to south-east. Period matters as much as height — a 14–18 second period carries far more power than an 8 second windswell of the same size, which is why a "small" long-period forecast can still produce serious waves.
- Wind — the difference between clean and blown out
- Offshore wind blows from the land into the wave and holds it up; onshore wind crumbles it. During the dry season the east and south-east trades are offshore on the Bukit and west coast, which is why those months are the classic Bali season. In the wet season the wind swings west and the east coast comes alive instead. Dawn is usually lightest either way.
- Tide
- Bali's reefs are shallow, and tide decides whether a spot is world-class or unsurfable. Low tide exposes reef at Bingin and Impossibles; Uluwatu, Balangan and Dreamland prefer mid to high. Check the table above before you commit to the drive — the right spot on the wrong tide is a wasted morning.
Reading the surf rating
- Excellent 8–10 Clean, well-shaped waves with light or offshore wind.
- Good 6–7 Good surf with decent wind. Great for intermediate to advanced surfers.
- Fair 4–5 Rideable, but not ideal. Fine for beginners and practice sessions.
- Poor 1–3 Small waves or strong onshore wind. Consider another activity.
Best times to surf in Bali
- Early morning5:30 – 8:00 AM Usually the cleanest conditions, with offshore winds and fewer crowds.
- Late afternoon4:00 – 6:00 PM Second-best window as the wind eases — and sunset sessions.
