Best Beaches in Bali by Area, With Honest Swimming Notes
Published · Updated · 7 min read
Short answer: for calm swimming, pick Sanur or Nusa Dua. For dramatic cliff scenery, pick the Bukit Peninsula (Dreamland, Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan), but treat the water there with respect. For snorkeling off the sand, go east to Amed or Padangbai. Most of the famous beaches in the south are better for sitting and watching than for swimming, and that catches a lot of first-timers out.
Which are the best beaches in Bali for swimming?
Sanur, Nusa Dua and Pandawa have the easiest water. Sanur's shallow water sits behind a long reef, so at low tide it is almost lagoon-like. Nusa Dua is flat, calm and well kept. Pandawa is a swimmable white-sand beach on the Bukit that is usually quiet in the morning before tour buses arrive. Jimbaran Bay has soft waves too.
The table sums up the rest of this guide. Check the notes below it before you commit, because tide and swell change a lot.
| Beach | Area | Swimming | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanur | Southeast coast | Calm, shallow, reef-protected | Long beachfront path |
| Nusa Dua | Southeast | Calm, flat | Tidy, suits nervous swimmers |
| Jimbaran | Southwest | Gentle waves | Seafood warungs on the sand |
| Dreamland | Bukit | Strong waves, red-flag zone | Busy near the entrance, quieter north |
| Padang Padang | Bukit | Fine in the cove, rough on big swell | Arrive before about 3 pm |
| Bingin | Bukit | Only on small days, no lifeguards | Sand shrinks at high tide |
| Balangan | Bukit | Poor, coral bottom | One of the quieter Bukit beaches |
| Berawa, Batu Bolong, Echo | Canggu | Not recommended, dumping waves | Surf lessons and sunsets |
| Amed (Jemeluk) | East | Calm bay, good snorkeling | Best 7 to 10 am |
Is Dreamland Beach good for relaxing and is it safe to swim?
Dreamland is good for sitting on soft white sand and watching sunsets, and only conditionally good for swimming. The waves are strong, they throw people around, and the section near the entrance is marked with two big red flags telling you not to swim there. It is not a beach for small children in the water.
It is a long beach, roughly 400 metres, and most people bunch up near the entrance where it is widest. Walk north for a few minutes and the crowds thin out. It faces west, which makes it one of the few beaches on the northern Bukit coast that gets a proper sunset.
The practical details, as published in a 2026 guide:
- Parking: about IDR 5,000 for a scooter and IDR 20,000 for a car, cash only. The car park is a 2 to 3 minute walk down stairs and along a raised walkway.
- Facilities: toilets (about IDR 3,000) and showers (about IDR 10,000) on the walkway, a warung, small shops and a beach club.
- Sunbeds: about IDR 200,000 for two for the day. Beds further along the beach tend to be taken in before sunset.
- Shade: very little near the entrance. There is more under the cliffs on the quieter stretch.
Surfers use it too. Our Dreamland surf report rates the break beginner to intermediate, with a sandy-bottom takeoff that is gentler than the reefs around it. Read more on our Dreamland Beach page.
Is Padang Padang Beach worth the stairs?
Yes, if you arrive before about 3 pm. Padang Padang is a small cove between cliffs, reached by a few flights of stairs and a narrow gap through the rock. The walk from the road takes about five minutes. Coming back up is the harder direction.
Entry was IDR 15,000 for adults and IDR 10,000 for children in a 2026 guide, cash only, with parking around IDR 2,000. It is open about 7 am to 7 pm. There are showers and changing rooms, but not many other facilities. Monkeys hang around the entrance and the car park, so zip your bags and don't leave anything in an open scooter seat.
Swimming is usually fine in the cove. At high tide the beach shrinks and waves reach the rocks, and on a big swell the shore break gets rough. The famous wave offshore is a different story. Our Padang Padang surf report calls it strictly an expert's wave, and it needs size to break properly. Sunset is when the cove fills up. Read more on our Padang Padang Beach page.
Are Bingin and Balangan good secluded beaches in Bali?
Both are quieter than Dreamland, and neither is a swimming beach. Think of them as places to sit, walk and watch surfers.
Bingin is a small cove under limestone cliffs. You park at the top and walk down steep steps, about 5 to 10 minutes. The sand disappears at high tide, so check the tide before you go and set up near the cliff if it is rising. There are usually no lifeguards. On calm days the inner section is fine for a dip, but entry is over rock and coral. The wave is for experienced surfers, as our Bingin surf report says.
Balangan is one of the quieter beaches on the Bukit and it has no entry fee. There is parking at both ends, around IDR 5,000 for a scooter and IDR 10,000 for a car at the larger north lot, which involves roughly 50 steps. Guides rate it poorly for swimming because of the coral bottom and rocks. Water shoes help. The cliff at the north end is the sunset viewpoint. Mid to high tide is best for the wave, and low tide exposes the reef, according to our Balangan surf report. More on the Balangan Beach page.
If you want one evening that covers a Bukit beach, a clifftop temple and sunset, our Uluwatu Sunset Tour starts from $35 per person. The Uluwatu surf report explains the wave you will see below the temple.
Where are the calm, easy beaches near the airport?
Sanur, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran are the low-effort choices. All three have easy access, food nearby and gentle conditions.
- Sanur: the beachfront path runs for several kilometres and is stroller-friendly. At low tide the water behind the reef is almost lagoon-like. The Sanur Beach page has the local details.
- Nusa Dua: flat, calm and tidy, and a sensible pick for nervous swimmers or small children. Our Nusa Dua Tour is $40 per car if you want a driver for the day.
- Jimbaran: a wide, flat bay with seafood warungs set up on the sand for sunset. Parking was about IDR 5,000 in one 2026 guide. See our Jimbaran beach dinner page for what to expect.
Can you swim at Canggu and the black sand beaches?
Not comfortably. Berawa has big waves and strong currents, Batu Bolong has dumping waves with rocks to one side, and Echo Beach has dumping waves too. Canggu is for surf lessons, sunsets and sitting at a beach bar.
Batu Bolong is the beginner surf spot, and our Canggu surf report rates it beginner to intermediate, with Echo Beach tougher. On the east coast, Keramas has black sand, but it is a high-performance right-hander for advanced surfers, not a paddling beach. Our Keramas surf report has the detail.
What are the best quiet beaches in eastern Bali?
Amed and Padangbai give you calm water and real snorkeling from the shore. This is the side of Bali for people who want beaches without a beach club.
At Amed, Jemeluk Bay is sheltered and you can walk straight in. Mid to high tide is best, and the calmest water is usually between about 7 and 10 am. Parking was about IDR 10,000. Amed also has a sunset angle, with golden light behind Mount Agung. Our page on Amed Sunset Point explains it, and be aware it gets busy each evening.
At Padangbai, Blue Lagoon is a small beach just north of the harbour with coral close to shore and shallow water, which suits beginners. Avoid midday ferry peaks because of boat traffic. Bias Tugel is a short walk down, about 10 minutes, and quieter. We run a Blue Lagoon snorkeling tour from $55 per person.
When is the best time to visit Bali beaches?
The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the clearest skies and most reliable beach days. Some guides narrow it to May to September. The wet season runs roughly November to March.
Whatever the month, tide matters more than most people expect on the Bukit. Bingin and Padang Padang shrink at high tide, and Balangan's reef shows at low tide. Look up the tide table the day before.

How do you plan a beach day with a driver?
Pick one area per day rather than crossing the island between beaches. The Bukit beaches sit near each other, so two of them plus a sunset is a realistic day with a driver. Tell us where you are staying and which beaches you have in mind, and ask us about the order.
Message us through our contact page with your dates and hotel, and we will put a beach day together.
